We are grateful to everyone of our 347 volunteers who donated over 3,716 hours of their time for charity in 2024. Friends of the Gurkha Museum saw a phenomenal 132% rise in membership in 2024. Our Friends directly contribute to the preservation and protection of the Gurkhas’ collection, the support of educational outreach, and the enhancement of the artefacts and archives.

On this, the most auspicious occasion in the Nepali calendar, we would like to wish you and your family a very Happy Dashain and a prosperous, peaceful year ahead.

In honour of Dashain, we have collated a number of images, spanning from the First World War to the present, to highlight how Gurkhas have marked this special period.

On 15 October Chris Jupp will give a lecture at The Gurkha Museum about the Hunza-Nagar Campaign. This important campaign was fought in 1891 between a small British force and fighters of the Hunza and Nagar kingdoms, now part of Pakistan. The British force included 200 Gurkhas of the 1st Battalion, 5th Gurkha Rifles. These Gurkhas fought with incredible heroism throughout the campaign and gained two Victoria Crosses within the same month.

The first of these VCs was awarded to Lieutenant (Lt) Guy Boisragon, who led a daring charge through the gates of Nilt Fort (pictured). Under heavy fire, Lt Boisragon moved between his men, organising reinforcements and carrying forward the attack. Just over two weeks later, Lieutenant John Manners-Smith gained the battalion a second VC leading an attack up the slopes of the Thol cliffs, the tops of which were occupied by strong enemy positions. Under a hail of rocks, Manners-Smith led a final dash up the slope and was the first to rush the enemy sangars. Among the Gurkha soldiers present, at least ten would earn the Indian Order of Merit during the campaign. This included Harkbir Thapa, Lt Manners-Smith’s orderly, who unflinchingly followed his officer into danger.
