Curator's Corner 🏛️ : After the #FirstWorldWar, which claimed around 880,000 British lives, discussions arose on how to honour these sacrifices. One initiative was to create bronze Memorial Plaques for every British serviceman who died, distributed to their next of kin.

Memorial Plaques were also distributed for fallen British Empire soldiers, including the families of British Indian Army personnel. Challenges arose in delivering plaques to the families of approximately 6,000 Gurkha soldiers due to name similarities and difficulties contacting their next of kin in rural Nepal. Undelivered plaques were melted down and recast into Memorial Bells by several Gurkha regiments, including the 4th Gurkha Rifles (4GR). 4GR had two bells cast, one for each of its two battalions, which were unveiled in a special ceremony on 21 October 1927.

These Memorial Bells were of great importance to 4GR. Kept at their regimental centre, the bells were used to mark the hours of the day and to muster soldiers to their duties. When India became independent in 1947, 4GR became a part of the Indian Army. Subsequently, the Memorial Bells remain in India. A silver miniature of one bell, commissioned by British officers, is now part of the Gurkha Museum’s collection and a part of our temporary exhibition.
