Introducing this year's summer exhibition at The Gurkha Museum...

In June The Gurkha Museum celebrated fifty years since first opening. Join us this August as we reflect on the last half a century of collecting Gurkha history as well as looking forward at the next fifty years.

Fighting for the Falkland Islands, action in Afghanistan and relief work during the 2015 Nepal earthquake, this exhibition will also shine a light on the impressive contribution modern Gurkhas have given over the last fifty years.

The exhibition will be open throughout August at the Museum in Winchester and will be free to view with every admission to the Museum. Entry is free for serving members of the Brigade of Gurkhas. Ticket prices and accessibility information can be found on our website. (Link in our bio)

Just a few hours away until England kick off in the final. Did you know that a Gurkha officer once played for England?

Inside left for Leeds United, Eric (Steve) Stephenson picked up two caps for the three lions including a 7-0 thrashing of Northern Ireland at Old Trafford. His club career saw him play for Leeds from 1935-1941 with a particular highlight being the1937/38 season where he scored a hat trick in the 4-3 home win over Sunderland which came in the middle of a spell of seven goals in seven games.

The footballer enlisted as a Gunner in the Royal Artillery in 1939 before going on to serve with the 3rd Battalion of the 2nd Goorkhas , taking part in Operation Longcloth, the first Wingate expedition. On September 8th 1944, at the age of 29, Stephenson led C Company in the opening attack on Point 1433, Tiger, where after fierce fighting, he was tragically killed trying to go to the aid of another company.

Celebrating 30 Years of The Royal Gurkha Rifles

After the end of the Cold War in 1991, the UK Government launched ‘Options for Change’, a significant reduction and restructuring of the British Army. As part of this, it was decided that the 2nd, 6th, 7th and 10th Gurkha Rifles would be amalgamated into a single regiment; the Royal Gurkha Rifles (RGR).

After several years of preparation, RGR officially came into existence in July 1994. In September, RGR held its formation parade in the presence of the Prince of Wales (now King Charles III).

By the end of 1995, the regiment was ready for its first deployment. Over the regiment's relatively short history, it has seen action in a number of conflicts including Afghanistan, Kosovo and Timor.

RGR also played a pivotal role during the COVID-19 pandemic, earthquake relief in Nepal and at Queen Elizabeth II's funeral.
