Are you aware of the famous tradition associated with Nishani Mai also known as The Queen’s Truncheon?

One of the oldest traditions within The Brigade of Gurkhas, Nishani Mai (loosely translated as ‘the Symbol of the Great Mother’) was originally presented to the 2nd Goorkha (The Sirmoor Rifles) Regiment as a gift from Queen Victoria on this day in 1863.

The Truncheon is held in considerable reverence by members of the Brigade of Gurkhas, as it is symbolic of over 200 years of service to the British Crown. New recruits to The Royal Gurkha Rifles often take part in a ceremony where they swear their allegiance to the Crown by touching it.

The drill for manoeuvring the Queen’s Truncheon on parade is unique, with the Truncheon Jemedar (the bearer of the Truncheon) and Escort traditionally marching on parade at a speed slightly faster than standard Rifle Regiment pace.

Earlier this year, we marked the sad passing of Rambahadur Limbu, the most recent Gurkha recipient of the Victoria Cross. Today marks the 58th anniversary of his heroic actions during the Borneo Confrontation where he rushed out in the face of relentless, heavy fire to rescue two seriously wounded Gurkhas.

Rambahadur’s own account of the action is modest, commenting simply that he considered it to have been his lucky day when noting the extreme good fortune of his survival entirely unscathed from such a dangerous situation.

We were honoured to host Rifleman Subash Gurung earlier this week for a cheque presentation after he and Rifleman Mahesh Limbu ran 400 miles in four months to commemorate the Gurkhas who marched from Chindwin to Fort Dufferin in 1945.

They raised an incredible £1627 for Gurkha heritage and the upcoming redevelopment of The Gurkha Museum. Dhanyabad Subash and Mahesh!
