The First World War broke out on 28 July 1914, and by the time the Gurkhas arrived on the Western Front, a period of static trench warfare had developed that would continue until spring 1918. Going into trenches along the Belgian frontier, the Gurkhas would fight through the bitterly cold winter of 1914-1915. Among the six Gurkha battalions in France were the 2nd Battalion, 8th Gurkha Rifles (2/8GR).

In September 1915, the French army planned a large-scale offensive against the Germans. In order to divert German reinforcements, Field Marshal Sir John French agreed that the British would support the offensive with an attack on German defences around the village of Loos. The attack was planned for 25 September, and was to be the largest British offensive of the war up to that point. 25 September 2025 marks the 110th anniversary of the Battle of Loos, which was very possibly the deadliest single day for a Gurkha battalion in their 210 years in the British Army.
