Project Kaida - August 2023

The work starts now: updating the kitchen plus a new research and education space.

Last month we shared the exciting news that The Gurkha Museum has been awarded an initial development grant from the National Lottery Heritage Fund (NLHF), matched by the serving officers and soldiers from the Brigade of Gurkhas, to reimagine, reinterpret and redevelop the Museum.  You can read our press release here.  Since then, we have three significant updates to share with you.

We have submitted our formal request to the NLHF for permission to begin and we have received permission to start Project Kaida! Our formal invitation to tender to four potential museum design teams have been sent.

Project Kaida, however, is far more than a Museum redesign. The funding will also provide an extensive outreach, engagement and partnership programme as well as an extensive digitisation of our globally important archive and a new research and education space. Work will commence on this new research space next month.

The upcoming library redevelopment is set to be a state-of-the-art facility, purpose-built to accommodate a myriad of educational activities. With a focus on lectures, conferences, and research, this modern space will become the global reference centre for all Gurkha history seekers.

The redesigned interior will boast an array of modern amenities, including brand-new furniture, sleek bookshelves, and a large, cutting-edge built-in interactive screen, providing visitors with a comfortable and inviting environment to immerse themselves in their research. This immersive display will open up countless possibilities for dynamic presentations, virtual learning experiences, and collaborative discussions, enhancing the Museum’s aim of being the centre for Gurkha heritage.

Before this work starts, we are focusing on refitting the kitchen and bar area on the second floor to better support forthcoming events.  We are excited to be sharing updates with you.
