Over 90,000 Gurkha soldiers fought in The First Wo

Over 90,000 Gurkha soldiers fought in The First World War.

For his actions at El-Kefr, Palestine on this day in 1918, Karanbahadur was awarded the Victoria Cross, just the second Gurkha soldier to ever receive the award.

It is early 1918. British and Allied forces have placed Ottoman Turkish troops on the defensive and are advancing from Egypt into Palestine.

It was during an attack near the Palestinian coast when his fellow soldiers were pinned down by an Ottoman machine gun post, Rifleman Karanbahadur Rana seized a gun from a dead comrade and opened fire knocking out the enemy machine-gun crew. He then went on to switch his fire on to the enemy bombers and riflemen in front of him despite having bombs thrown at him and heavy fire from both flanks. He kept his gun in action and showed great calmness in removing defects which on two occasions prevented the gun from firing.

This allowed his colleagues, some of whom had been pinned down for several hours, to withdraw to safety.

For his ‘very high standard of honour and devotion to duty’, Karanbahadur was awarded the Victoria Cross which is now protected by The Gurkha Museum Trust.
