Earlier this year, we marked the sad passing of Ra

Earlier this year, we marked the sad passing of Rambahadur Limbu, the most recent Gurkha recipient of the Victoria Cross. Today marks the 58th anniversary of his heroic actions during the Borneo Confrontation where he rushed out in the face of relentless, heavy fire to rescue two seriously wounded Gurkhas.

Rambahadur’s own account of the action is modest, commenting simply that he considered it to have been his lucky day when noting the extreme good fortune of his survival entirely unscathed from such a dangerous situation.

We were honoured to host Rifleman Subash Gurung earlier this week for a cheque presentation after he and Rifleman Mahesh Limbu ran 400 miles in four months to commemorate the Gurkhas who marched from Chindwin to Fort Dufferin in 1945.

They raised an incredible £1627 for Gurkha heritage and the upcoming redevelopment of The Gurkha Museum. Dhanyabad Subash and Mahesh!

Celebrated in Nepal and within the Brigade of Gurk

Celebrated in Nepal and within the Brigade of Gurkhas, Tihar is a five-day Hindu festival. Oil lamps are lit and families come together to feast and celebrate. Each day honours a different animal, the crow, the dog, the cow and the ox.

On the second day of Tihar, known as Kukur Tihar, Hindus honour their pet dogs. It is said that dogs are not only man's best friend but also the gatekeepers of the afterlife and so Kukur Tihar is to show gratitude for assuring safe journeys of departed souls.

In honour of Kukur Tihar, let us share with you the rather unique story of 5 Gurkha Dog Company...

5 Gurkha Dog Company was raised on 1st January 1965 as an extra Regimental Employment (Pool) Unit of the Brigade of Gurkhas. The role of the unit was to guard certain vulnerable installations on Singapore Island (Pulau Ujong). The unit also had detachments in Labaun, Seria and parts of Borneo.

The 100 war dogs were imported into Singapore by air, predominantly from England with a few from Australia. Reports from the time show Gurkhas within the unit took well to dog handling, all handling instructions were given in English. Some dog handlers, however, took pride in the fact that their dogs could understand and carry out commands in Gurkhali as well. The decision was made in 1966 to disband 5 Gurkha Dog Company by 31st December 1969 in line with the general reduction of the Brigade of Gurkhas at the time.
