This object highlights the bond between those separated by circumstance: the silver cigarette case of Captain John Whitesmith.

Captain Whitesmith served in the 4th Battalion, 7th Gurkha Rifles (4/7GR) during World War II, primarily stationed on the North West Frontier of India. While this role was deemed less glamorous by some, maintaining security there was vital, and the battalion approached its duties with unwavering commitment.

While serving, Captain Whitesmith carried this engraved silver cigarette case, which surprisingly contained three unsmoked Players cigarettes when recently displayed in the Museum's "Soldiering In Silver" exhibition. Inside the case was also a photograph of an unknown young woman, identified as his fiancé.

Sentimental items like this are common in the Museum's collections, serving as poignant reminders of the separations soldiers face during their service.

In honour of Valentine’s Day, we highlight the ‘sweetheart’ brooch, commonly given by soldiers during the First and Second World Wars to their loved ones. These brooches often featured the soldier's regiment badge, adorned with decorations like diamonds or love hearts. Notably, the Gurkhas participated in this tradition, and our collection includes examples from various Gurkha units.

This particular brooch is linked to Colonel Dominic ‘Nick’ Neill of the 2nd Gurkha Rifles, who served in Burma during WWII and took part in the first Chindit operation in 1943. He was also present at Tamandu in March 1945, where his officer, Bhanbhagta Gurung, won the Victoria Cross.
