This metal tankard was awarded as a prize in a bil

This metal tankard was awarded as a prize in a billiards competition held in September 1946. This tankard is part of Colonel Armstrong's collection from the 7th Gurkha Rifles. During the 19th and 20th centuries, billiards tables were commonly found in the British officers' mess, including Gurkha regiments. This unique tankard is currently on display at The Gurkha Museum Trust as part of a free temporary exhibition.

Although less known today, a small group of Britis

Although less known today, a small group of British Gurkha officers played a significant role in the history of mountaineering during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. One such officer, Brigadier Charles Bruce of the 5th and later the 6th Gurkha Rifles, included his Gurkha soldiers in his climbing expeditions due to their fitness and skills.

By the 1920s, Bruce led the first two attempts to climb Mount Everest, known as 'Sagarmatha' in Nepal. His climbing teams featured not only expert European climbers but also his fittest and most skilled Gurkha mountaineers. One notable Gurkha, Naik (Corporal) Tejbir Bura of the 6th Gurkha Rifles, played a crucial role in the final push of the first expedition in 1922.

As a result of this effort, Bura became the only Gurkha to receive an Olympic medal for Alpinism, awarded to members of the 1922 team at the 1924 Olympics. This unique medal is currently held by The Gurkha Museum Trust and is on display in a FREE temporary exhibition.

We’re proud to be hosting Through the Lens of a Gurkha, an exhibition showcasing the winning photographs and videos from the Brigade of Gurkhas’ annual competition.

For more than 200 years, Gurkhas have served the Crown with courage and commitment. This exhibition offers a powerful and personal insight into their world, seen through their own eyes. The winning entries are now on display in our second-floor gallery, alongside our current temporary exhibition.
