This #khukuri belonged to a soldier from the 153rd #Gurkha Parachute Battalion, raised in 1941. 153rd Battalion was the first ever Gurkha airbourne unit. As a part of the 50th Indian infantry Brigade, the battalion fought at the battle of Sangshak in March 1944 against a Japanese force mounting an invasion of India. This crucial delaying action brough time for Allied force to prepare defence at Imphal.

In 1942, the Imperial Japanese Army conquered the Dutch East Indies, which is now predominantly part of the territory of Indonesia. Although in the 19th century Indonesia had been colonised by the Dutch, Japanese forces rapidly advanced across the Indonesian archipelago and quickly overwhelmed local Dutch forces, surrendering on 8 March 1942.

The Japanese forces dismantled the Dutch colonial government, interning thousands of Dutch civilians in prison camps as well as stoking anti-Western sentiments among the Indonesian population. By 1945, very few Indonesians desired the return of Dutch administration, but following Japan's defeat in September 1945, the return became imminent.

The Dutch were in no position to reoccupy their former colony, with only a small army and navy. It would fall to the British to secure the archipelago, disarm the Japanese, and liberate the thousands of Dutch civilians still held in internment camps until the Dutch armed forces had rebuilt themselves to the point of being able to take on security duties. Arriving in Java from October 1945, British Indian forces, including several Gurkha battalions, would find themselves in the centre of a bitter conflict.
