Job Opportunity

Archives and Digitisation Officer

For over 200 years, Gurkha soldiers, recruited from Nepal, have loyally served this country, many making the ultimate sacrifice. Through its collections and archives The Gurkha Museum represents a unique and historic relationship, one that continues to this day, with the annual recruitment of Gurkhas from Nepal continuing to be vital for Britain’s Armed Forces.

The Gurkha Museum Trust is a Charitable Incorporated Organisation (Registration No 1169920). The Museum is located in Peninsula Square, Winchester in Hampshire along with five other military museums. It is open throughout the year and receives about 12,000 visitors annually. In addition to the permanent exhibition, reserve collection and archive, the Museum is fully engaged with education and outreach programmes, lectures, events and with trading, and other commercial activities that support its mission.

Now at a critical juncture in its history, the Museum is on the start line of a major redevelopment project which will result in a step change in its public engagement, in the presentation and interpretation of its collections, and in digital access to its archive.

This new role is supported by Development Phase funding from the National Lottery Heritage Fund (NLHF), and is initially offered on a full time, fixed-term basis until 31 Dec 2024*. It will play a pivotal role in preparing our archives and collections for greater online public access.

The new role will support the Assistant Curator in extending the Museum’s reach through digitisation of the Museum’s extensive archives and making its collections more accessible to researchers and historians through better cataloguing and collections management. We are looking for a self-starter who takes a proactive approach to their job, being able to work on multiple projects simultaneously while working collaboratively with the rest of the team.
