The Gurkha Museum Trust is proud to present Through the Lens of a Gurkha, an exhibition featuring the winning entries from the Brigade of Gurkhas’ annual photography and video competition.

For over two centuries, Gurkhas have served the Crown with honour, and this annual competition offers a rare glimpse into how these brave soldiers see the world through their own eyes. The Gurkha Museum is honoured to display the winning works in our second-floor gallery, alongside our other temporary exhibition. Huge congratulation to the winners!

Learn more about aftermath of the Second World War and the chaos across Southeast Asia, with a personal account from Lieutenant Colonel (Lt Col) JP Cross :

After the Second World War, Southeast Asia experienced a lot of chaos, especially after the sudden end of Japanese occupation in September 1945. This change led to conflicts in French Indochina and the Dutch East Indies, now known as Indonesia. Many local people resisted the return of European colonial rule. During this time, several Gurkha battalions were sent into the fighting, encountering combat that was as intense as anything they faced during the war.

In late September 1945, Operation Masterdom began. The 20th Indian Division was tasked with disarming and sending home 70,000 Japanese soldiers in southern Indochina, known historically as Cochin-China. This operation is an important part of the Gurkhas' history after the war.

The fighting mostly did not reach Indochina, so the Japanese troops there remained strong and well-equipped. Disarming these undefeated soldiers was a major concern for the Allies. In October, the 20th Indian Division, which included three Gurkha battalions, arrived in Indochina. However, Major General Douglas Gracey, the Division’s commander, quickly realized that their mission would be more complicated than expected.
