On this day 162 years ago, one of the oldest traditions within The Brigade of Gurkhas, Nishani Mai was originally presented to the 2nd Goorkha (The Sirmoor Rifles) Regiment as a gift from Queen Victoria. This Truncheon replaced a third Honorary awarded to that Regiment (now part of The Royal Gurkha Rifles) for distinguished service at the Siege of Delhi in 1857.

The Truncheon is held in considerable reverence by members of the Brigade of Gurkhas, as it is symbolic of over 200 years of service to the British Crown. New recruits to The Royal Gurkha Rifles often take part in a ceremony where they swear their allegiance to the Crown by touching it.

We would like to express our heartfelt gratitude to Nepalese ladies at the Defence School of Transport for raising £150 for Project Kaida through food sales during the recent Tihar celebration. We also want to recognise Corporal Manoj Limbu for raising £801 to support the Gurkha Museum. He achieved this through his great initiative and hard work, organising a charity Nepali movie screening and food sales on Sunday 09 November.

On this day in 1990, 28 (Ambulance) Squadron The #Gurkha Transport Regiment was formed from the 28 and 31 Squadrons for service during the Gulf War in 1991, specifically under Operation Granby (the British contribution to the conflict). The Squadron was subsequently disbanded on April 5, 1991.

Richard Kirby Ridgeway was born on August 18, 1848

Richard Kirby Ridgeway was born on August 18, 1848, in County Meath, Ireland and joined the 44th (Sylhet) Light Infantry, a predecessor of the 8th Gurkha Rifles, in 1874. Throughout much of its history, the regiment was engaged in pacifying tribal groups in northeastern India, including those living in the Naga Hills.

On 22 November 1879, during a military mission, the 44th captured the outer defenses of Konoma but had trouble with the inner stone walls defended by armed Naga fighters. Despite this, Ridgeway led two more attacks. He was shot in the shoulder but managed to tear down a section of the planking and create an entrance which could be exploited by his men, remained there under fire until his men had moved through.

After this expedition, Ridgeway became a Captain on 8 January 1880, and received the Victoria Cross on 11 May 1880. By 1891, he commanded the 44th Gurkha (Rifle) Regiment of Bengal Infantry and took part in a mission into Manipur. He was promoted to Colonel in 1898 and named a Companion of the Order of The Bath in 1905. Ridgeway retired to Yorkshire in 1906 and died on 11 October 1924, at the age of 76.
