Nepali people celebrate by taking ritual baths during this festival as well as eating festive foods such as sakhara khanda (sweet potatoes), tarul (Yam), and chaku (a concentrate made from sugarcane juice, jaggery, ghee and nut)

On this day 83 years ago, the 2nd Battalion of the 10th Gurkha Riffles (2/10 GR) arrived in Basra, modern-day Iraq. They had transferred from Aden to join the remains of the 3rd Indian Motor Brigade. Together these units, and others, formed the 43rd Gurkha Lorried Infantry Brigade and deployed to Italy. During the Second World War, this Gurkha brigade’s bravery and efforts against Nazi German troops were truly remarkable. The Gurkhas managed to advance to some of the northernmost points of the Italian Campaign before the German surrender in May 1945.

On 4 January 1872, Major Donald Macintyre faced a fierce battles against the Mohmands and other hill tribes. He proved his courage during the first Looshai Expedition serving with an antecedent unit to 2GR. His bravery in storming the stockaded village of Lalgnoora awarded him the esteemed Victoria Cross!
