This khukuri belonged to a soldier from the 153rd

This khukuri belonged to a soldier from the 153rd Gurkha Parachute Battalion, raised in 1941. 153rd Battalion was the first ever Gurkha airbourne unit. As a part of the 50th Indian infantry Brigade, the battalion fought at the battle of Sangshak in March 1944 against a Japanese force mounting an invasion of India. This crucial delaying action brough time for Allied force to prepare defence at Imphal.

The khukuri is part of The Gurkha Museum Trust's collection and is currently on display in the summer exhibition.

On 9 March 1945, during a critical moment in the fight for Mandalay Hill, Subedar Aiman Gurung of the 4th battalion, 4th Gurkha Rifles rushed foward to break up a Japanese counterattack, Firing his Thompson submachine gun from the hip, Aiman scatteretd the enemy soldiers. For his bravery and leadership throughout the attack, Subedar Aiman was awarded the Military Cross.

His medal set are held by The Gurkha Museum Trust and is currently on display in the summer exhibition.

Invitation to all veterans for a morning of connection, conversation and coffee. Join the outreach team on Thursday 28 August between 1000 hrs and 1200 hrs in The Gurkha Museum’s library.

There will be an opportunity to meet the outreach team, hear from the Director, explore the summer exhibition, Victory in 1945, that celebrates the service of Gurkhas eighty years ago and enjoy a brew with fellow veterans. We look forward to welcoming you at any time on Thursday 28 August between 1000 hrs to 1200 hrs.

Escape kit of Major Henry Mooney : During the Second World War, 'escape kits' were sometimes issued in case of capture. This kit, which belonged to Major Henry Mooney of The 10th Gurkha Rifles, included compass (disguised as a button), an eyeglass, a miniature saw and a pen knife. Fortunately, Major Mooney never had to use its contents. This is held by The Gurkha Museum Trust and is currently on display in the summer exhibition.
