On 8 December 1962, pro-Sukarno rebels from a grou

On 8 December 1962, pro-Sukarno rebels from a group called the Tentara Nasional Keamanan Umum (TNKU) tried to capture the Sultan of Brunei. The Sultan asked the British for help. In response, the British Far East Command got two companies of Gurkhas from the 1st Battalion, 2nd Gurkha Rifles ready for airlift from Singapore, which is 900 miles away. Nine hours later, the Gurkhas arrived at Labaun airfield around 2200 hrs that night and moved to confront the rebels, suffering only minor injuries.

In the following ten days, more units joined the Gurkhas in an operation called Operation ALE. In total, they captured over 3,400 rebels and effectively ended the rebellion. However, the search for any rebels that escaped into the jungle continued until 1963.
