Rifleman Thaman Gurung of the 5th Royal Gurkha Rif

Rifleman Thaman Gurung of the 5th Royal Gurkha Rifles earned his Victoria Cross on 10 November 1944, in Italy for his bravery during an enemy attack.

Born in 1924 in Singla, Nepal, Thaman joined the 5th Royal Gurkha Rifles in September 1944. On November 10, while on a patrol to Monte San Bartolo, he noticed enemy troops preparing to fire on his comrade and charged at them, forcing their surrender.

Despite the danger, Thaman ascended the bluff, firing at hidden German positions, which allowed his platoon to attempt an assault. When they faced heavy fire and had to retreat, Thaman risked his life again to provide cover, returning for more ammunition. He charged once more to help his teammates escape, but was tragically killed in the process.

Thaman Gurung’s actions reduced casualties for his platoon and contributed to the eventual capture of Monte San Bartolo. He was only 20 when he died, and his heroism earned him the Victoria Cross, presented posthumously to his mother by Field Marshal Lord Wavell in December 1945.

On November 7 1886, 140 years ago, the Third Anglo

On November 7 1886, 140 years ago, the Third Anglo-Burmese War began. It ended three weeks later on November 29. This war was the last of three conflicts in the 19th century between Burma and Britain, which was initially represented by the Honourable East India Company and later by the British government. These wars gradually placed Burma under British control.

Although the Burmese forces lost the war, resistance continued for many years after the annexation. As a result, the British could only maintain control through a network of military outposts and police stations across Burma. To staff these posts and reduce costs, several Military Police Battalions were created starting in 1886. Many #Gurkhas were recruited into these battalions, along with troops from Northern India, including areas like Garhwal and Kumaon.

Did you know? Gurkha regiments have had military bands since the middle of the nineteenth century. The Sirmoor Rifle Regiment, later 2nd King Edward VII’s Own Gurkha Rifles (The Sirmoor Rifles) (2GR), was the first Gurkha regiment to form a band immediately after the Indian Mutiny in 1859.

In the mid 1950s, authority was given to raise a staff band for The Brigade of Gurkhas. This band served in the Far East for 15 years until amalgamated with the Band of 2GR. The Band of the Brigade of Gurkhas (2GR) undertook its first operational tour of duty by providing support to the Army’s deployed medical units during the Gulf War of 1991.
