Throughout the history of Gurkha recruitment, Gurk

Throughout the history of Gurkha recruitment, Gurkha units have included a group of children related to their soldiers and officers. Often, the sons of Gurkha soldiers were encouraged to support their fathers' units, taking on roles such as bugle boys or in similar capacities.

After a reorganization of Gurkha units in 1948, a centralised "Boys Company" was established. From 1948 to 1968, sons of serving Gurkha soldiers who showed promise could join this unit between the ages of approximately c10-14. They received basic military training, often as preparation for a future career as a Gurkha soldier. Trophies, like the one mentioned, would be awarded to the best performing boy each year. This is held by The Gurkha Museum Trust and is currently on display in the FREE temporary exhibition.

The Gurkha Museum Trust is proud to present Through the Lens of a Gurkha, an exhibition featuring the winning entries from the Brigade of Gurkhas’ annual photography and video competition.

For over two centuries, Gurkhas have served the Crown with honour, and this annual competition offers a rare glimpse into how these brave soldiers see the world through their own eyes. The Gurkha Museum is honoured to display the winning works in our second-floor gallery, alongside our other temporary exhibition. Huge congratulation to the winners!

Curator's Corner 🏛️: In August 1949,Rifleman Prasad Limbu had a close call during a firefight. A bullet hit his ammunition pouch, but it fortunately lodged in a clip of 303 ammunition. This saved Prasad from being injured.

In 1948, communist insurgents attacked the British-backed Malayan government, leading to a long guerilla war. Prasad was with the 1st Battalion, 10th Gurkha Rifles (1/10GR), which killed or captured 31 insurgents by March 1949.

On 20 August, while on a 17-day patrol near Johore, Parsad followed an enemy ration party to a group of insurgents. He fought them, killing one at close range. Despite being shot at, he continued fighting until they retreated. For his bravery, he received a Mention in Dispatches.

This #khukuri belonged to a soldier from the 153rd

This #khukuri belonged to a soldier from the 153rd #Gurkha Parachute Battalion, raised in 1941. 153rd Battalion was the first ever Gurkha airbourne unit. As a part of the 50th Indian infantry Brigade, the battalion fought at the battle of Sangshak in March 1944 against a Japanese force mounting an invasion of India. This crucial delaying action brough time for Allied force to prepare defence at Imphal.
