On 15 August 1945, the Empire of Japan surrendered to the Allied powers, bringing an end to the Second World War after six years of conflict. The announcement of Japan's surrender triggered mass celebrations around the world, but perhaps no group was more relieved than the thousands of Allied prisoners of war (PoWs) held across Japan and the Far East.

Changi Prison, a POW camp during World War II, housed thousands of Allied soldiers. During the war, Japanese forces gained notoriety for their harsh treatment of PoWs. At that time, Japanese society was heavily influenced by militarism, and surrender was widely viewed as a dishonorable act. As a result, many Japanese soldiers believed that Allied PoWs did not deserve respect.

#OnThisDay in 1939, Britain declared war on Germany. At the start of the Second World War, nearly 20,000 Gurkhas were serving in the Indian Army. By 1945, over 140,000 Gurkhas had fought in the war, with 23,655 casualties, including more than 9,056 deaths. They saw action in the North Africa and Italy, as well as in Greece, Iraq, Syria, and notably in the Far East, from North Malaya to Singapore and Burma.

From 1942 to 1945, Gurkha troops of the 14th Army participated in one of the most brutal continuous campaigns of the war. A total of 12 Victoria Crosses were awarded to Gurkha regiments, with 5 given posthumously to those killed during their heroic actions.
