On 23 February 1917 (108 years ago) as part of the Allied attack against Turkish forces in 1917, men from the 2nd Battalion of the 9th Gurkha Rifles were tasked with forcibly crossing the Tigris River at Shumran in Mesopotamia. British troops had recently freed the besieged city of Kut and were eager to exploit their advantage towards Baghdad.

Major George Wheeler led his soldiers from the front, establishing and holding a beachhead on the other side of the river against a fierce Turkish counterattack, sustaining a bayonet wound to the head in the process. He would subsequently get the Victoria Cross for his actions.

Did you know that the Gurkha Company (Sittang), a training unit at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, is named after the Battle of the Sittang Bridge?

In January 1942, the Empire of Japan invaded Burma and by late February, British and Indian forces were in retreat. The 17th Indian Division, including Gurkha battalions, was withdrawing from the Sittang Bridge, a crucial crossing point on the Sittang river. The division engaged in intense fighting against the Japanese, using their khukuris to delay their advance.

On 23 February, General Sir John Smyth VC made the controversial decision to blow the bridge whilst part of the 17th Division was still on the far bank. Thousands of soldiers were stranded, many of whom became prisoners of war. Others would make attempts to cross the river in the coming days, either by swimming or constructing improvised rafts. Despite the losses at the bridge the 17th Indian Division was not destroyed and was able to be re-equipped and continue as a fighting force throughout much of the rest of the campaign.

The Path to Victory series includes a monthly article that aligns with the anniversaries of the major battles involving the Gurkhas leading up to Victory over Japan (VJ) Day. The Museum's Path to Victory series highlights the service and sacrifices of the #Gurkhas in 1945.

In Path to Victory II, we explore the brave Gurkha units as they crossed the Irrawaddy, the largest river in Burma. This crossing was a crucial challenge for Lieutenant General William 'Bill' Slim, the commander of the 14th Army, who aimed to engage the Japanese in the plains around Mandalay. The 19th Indian Infantry Division successfully crossed the river north of Mandalay with three Gurkha units, including the 1st Battalion, 6th Gurkha Rifles. On 14 February, the 2nd British and 20th Indian Divisions followed suit, leading to some intense battles in the Yeshin-Minbantaung area.
