🎄🎁 As Christmas approaches, let's take a moment to look back on Christmas Day in 1947 on the north-west frontier. The museum recently discovered some photographs in the archives from the 1st Battalion, 1st Gurkha Rifles during their tour on the north-west frontier in 1947. One notable photograph captures a football match on Christmas Day 1947, where British officers faced off against Gurkha officers in Razmak. The Gurkhas emerged victorious in this friendly match.

Burns Night at The Gurkha Museum: Nepali dinner with a Scottish twist. Gurkhas have a long affiliation with Scottish regiments. Gurkha and Scottish troops fought side-by-side throughout the world. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🇳🇵

For Burns Night 2026 on Saturday 24 January, The Gurkha Museum is celebrating the legacy of this relationship, as well as the great poet Robert Burns, with a black-tie event in the McDonald Gallery and a three-course Nepali dinner with a Scottish twist.

George Nicholas Channer was born in Allahabad, Ind

George Nicholas Channer was born in Allahabad, India, in January 1843. He was transferred to the 2nd Bengal Native (Light) Infantry in December 1869, and promoted to Captain in September 1871. He served during the Looshai campaign before being appointed to the 1st Goorkha Regiment in March 1873.

On 20 December 1875, Captain Channer was awarded the Victoria Cross for being 'the first to jump into enemy's stockade to which he had been dispatched with a small party of the 1st Goorkha light Infantry.' The Officer commanding reported that if Major Channer, by his foresight, coolness, and intrepidity, had not taken this Stockade, a great loss of life must have occurred. He was subsequently promoted to Brevet Major.

John Manners-Smith was born in Lahore in August 18

John Manners-Smith was born in Lahore in August 1864. At the age of 22, he was appointed as a Lieutenant in the 5th Goorkha Regiment, (The Hazara Goorkha Battalion). The following year, he transitioned to the Political Department.

In 1891, he was assigned to special duty in Gilgit coinciding with the assembly of the Hunza-Nagar Expedition at Chalt. The Field Force included the 5th Gurkha (Rifle) Regiment, and Lieutenant Manners-Smith served as a Political Officer during this campaign.

Lieutenant John Manners-Smith was awarded the Victoria Cross for his bravery in leading the storming party that attacked and captured a strong position held by the enemy near Nilt during the Hunza-Nagar Expedition on 20 December 1891.
