Today marks the 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe (VE day). Just one day after Nazi Germany's surrender on May 8, 1945, British Prime Minister Winston Churchill triumphantly declared that the war in Europe had come to an end.

In 2025, as the nation comes together to commemorate and celebrate the 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe (VE day) over Nazi Germany and its allies, it is important to acknowledge in May 1945 the war in the Far East against the Japanese continued.

In commemorating the 80th anniversary of VE Day and in recognition of this significant milestone, The Gurkha Museum Trust has written an insightful article that highlights the remarkable contributions of the Gurkhas during the Second World War. It’s a poignant reminder that on that historic day, May 8, 1945, some Gurkha soldiers were enduring the hardships as Japanese prisoners of war (PoWs).

On 28 April 2025, the Secretary of State for Defence announced the creation of the King’s Gurkha Artillery (KGA). The Gurkha Museum Trust is thrilled to celebrate this exciting new chapter in Gurkha history.

Our mission is to record the creation and disarmament of Gurkha cap badges and units, while also commemorating the Gurkhas’ campaigns, decorations, and deployment.

At our museum, our collection features a wonderful

At our museum, our collection features a wonderful variety of items that tell the story of over 210 years of Gurkha history from around the world. It’s truly a treasure trove, but taking care of such a diverse collection comes with its own set of challenges.

One of our biggest concerns lately has been dealing with pests in our storage areas. We're happy to report that we’ve completed this process, which helps protect our collections, one of the mission of The Gurkha Museum Trust. We reached out to the Association of Independent Museums, and thanks to a generous grant from their Pilgrim Trust Collections Care Scheme, we were able to implement a freezing treatment for a large part of our stored collections.

A big thank you to Association of Independent Museums for their support in helping us care for our collection and to The Pilgrim trust for their generous grant. With their help, we’re proud to be able to protect, preserve, and promote 210 years of the incredible Gurkha history.

Today marks a significant milestone—the 10th ann

Today marks a significant milestone—the 10th anniversary of the devastating earthquake in Nepal. On April 25, 2015, at precisely 11:56 Nepal Standard Time, a powerful 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck near Gorkha district and leaving 8,632 dead and 19,009 injured.

In times of crisis, Gurkha soldiers have consistently risen to the occasion, providing essential emergency aid and executing countless lifesaving missions. When their homeland was shaken by this catastrophe, these soldiers returned to Nepal, ready to lend a helping hand. Known as Operation MARMAT, their deployment swiftly shifted from immediate relief efforts to long-term reconstruction.
