Off the Battlefield, On the Scene – Summer exhibition opening 2022
In the evening of the 28th July 2022, we were excited to launch our latest exhibition, ‘Off the Battlefield, On the Scene: Gurkhas and military aid to civil authorities.
Throughout their history Gurkha soldiers have been known for their ferocity in battle and known as ‘The Bravest of the Brave’. However, in the same breath they are also known as the most generous of the generous, and their role has always involved many forms of bravery. The exhibition aims to showcase a different side to Gurkhas and their military service.
Officially opened by the Chief fire officer of the Hampshire and Isle of Wight fire and rescue service, Neil Odin, the exhibition, amongst other things, aims to shine a light on the Gurkhas role with firefighting when required since the early 1970’s.
The Gurkha Museum Director Dr Daren Bowyer said:
“For over 200 years, Gurkha soldiers, recruited from Nepal, have loyally served this country, many making the ultimate sacrifice. The Gurkha Museum preserves the heritage of the Brigade of Gurkhas and tells this story to the British public. This exhibition showcases the remarkable range of support that Gurkhas and the wider military give to the community at times of need. From supporting the UK’s Covid-19 response to anti-poaching patrols in Kenya, this exhibition will highlight their vital roles, serving the country, away from the battlefield.”
The exhibition will open to the public on Monday 1 August and will run until Wednesday 31 August inclusive. Entry to the exhibition is free with admission to the museum. If you are unable to make it to the Museum the exhibition will be available online at thegurkhamuseum.co.uk from Thursday 1 September.
