#Onthisday in 1944, the 2/7 Gurkha Regiment arrive

#Onthisday in 1944, the 2/7 Gurkha Regiment arrived in the village of Tavoleto. This village was significant for defense due to its elevated position, which offered excellent views for artillery placement. The Gurkhas were assigned the task of capturing Tavoleto because of their expertise in taking steep and heavily fortified locations.

Although they arrived on August 30, they struggled to make progress due to heavy enemy fire. On the night of 2 September 1944, they attacked again, this time with support from the Cameron Highlanders.

The battle involved tough fighting as the Gurkhas worked to clear Tavoleto street by street. They faced a German counterattack on 4 September but managed to hold the town until tank support arrived, securing Tavoleto for the Allies.

On 30 August 2018, the Brigade of Gurkhas celebrated the formation of Gurkha Company (Tavoleto) during a parade at Warminster, remembering this important battle.
