‘Nishani Mai’ – The Queen’s Truncheon
On 30th November 1863, at Lahore in India, the “Queen’s Truncheon” was presented to the 2nd Goorkha (The Sirmoor Rifles) Regiment as a gift from Queen Victoria. This Truncheon replaced a third Honorary awarded to that Regiment (now part of The Royal Gurkha Rifles) for distinguished service at the Siege of Delhi in 1857.

The Truncheon, which is also known as the ‘Nishani Mai’ is held in considerable reverence by members of the Brigade of Gurkhas, as it is symbolic of over 200 years of service to the British Crown. New recruits to The Royal Gurkha Rifles are expected to take part in a ceremony where they are required swear their allegiance to the Crown by touching it. As would be expected, the drill for manoeuvring the Queen’s Truncheon on parade is unique, with the Truncheon Jemedar (the bearer of the Truncheon) and Escort traditionally marching on parade at a speed slightly faster than standard Rifle Regiment pace.

The Queen’s Truncheon is on display at Sir John Moore Barracks in Folkestone, the home of Royal Gurkha Rifles. A replica of the truncheon is held by The Gurkha Museum. #Gurkhas #gurkhahistory #onthisday #otd #onthisdayinhistory

Today is the Wedding Anniversary of HM The Queen and HRH The Duke of Edinburgh.

On 20th November 1947 there were married in Westminster Abbey in London.

On 1st January 1959, 6th Gurkha Rifles became 6th Queen Elizabeth’s Own Gurkha Rifles and 7th Gurkha Rifles became 7th Duke of Edinburgh’s Own Gurkha Rifles.

On this day of Remembrance and after the nation marked the 75th anniversary of Victory over Japan Day (VJ Day) in the Summer, a Gurkha officer has paid tribute to his grandfather who was awarded the Victoria Cross.

Rifleman Bhanbhagta Gurung VC was given the nation’s highest honour for valour in recognition of his “outstanding bravery and complete disregard for his own safety” during fighting in Burma on 5 March 1945. As 3rd Battalion, 2nd Gurkha Rifles advanced near Tamandu they came under heavy and accurate machine gun, mortar and sniper fire from Japanese troops. Repeatedly exposing himself to danger, Bhanbaghta Gurung VC cleared five positions singlehandedly, inspiring his colleagues to overcome the Japanese resistance.

Captain Buddhi Gurung, who works at the Infantry Battle School in Brecon, is Bhanbaghta Gurung VC’s grandson and spoke of how his grandfather’s heroism inspired him to serve as a Gurkha.
