GALLIPOLI DAY – Celebrated by The Royal Gurkha Rifles

Gallipoli Day commemorates the actions of 6th and 10th Gurkha Rifles in the Gallipoli campaign in 1915 during the First World War. With the aim of creating a second front, opening up land communications with Russia and defeating Turkey, Gurkha soldiers fought magnificently despite heavy casualties and left the Gallipoli peninsula with their morale and honour intact. The 6th Gurkha Rifles gained immortal fame at the capture of a feature later to be called “Gurkha Bluff” and at Sari Bair where they were the only troops to reach the crest overlooking the Straits in the entire campaign. #Gurkhas #BravestoftheBrave #GurkhaHeritage #MilitaryHistory #ArmyMuseum

Standard of the Burma Star Association.
The Burma Star was one of the Campaign Stars issued for service during the Second World War. After the conflict an association was set up to support its recipients in dealing with the hardships experienced during the campaign, known as the Burma Star Association, with Field Marshal Viscount Slim as its first President.

The Burma Star Association standard was laid up at the Museum when the Southampton branch of the association was disbanded.

Second World War-Era Service Kukri.
The Kukri of the Gurkha soldier serves as both an effective weapon and a functional tool, a combination which made it perfect for the terrain and type of warfare the Gurkhas would be involved in during the Burma Campaign. Service kukris at the time, though somewhat smaller than those of the First World War, were designed to be strong, sturdy and easily kept sharp in difficult conditions. Officer’s Hat, Felt, Gurkha, 1st King George V’s Own Gurkha Rifles. The ‘Hat, Felt, Gurkha’ or Gurkha Hat has been worn by officers and soldiers of the Gurkha Regiments since the early 20th Century, and was a distinctive aspect of their uniform during the Second World War. The flash seen on its side helped identify the unit of its wearer.

Japanese propaganda aimed at inhabitants of the territories they occupied and conquered, as well as the soldiers of the opposing Allied armies, focused on inequalities between East Asian and Indian soldiers and European officers, and on Japan’s role as a liberator from European oppression. In the case of Gurkha soldiers, messages focused on the perceived unfairness of Nepalese soldiers fighting for Britain for little reward. Leaflets were often dropped over Allied positions portraying Allied politicians and commanders as decadent and as taking advantage of their colonies. The Arisaka Type 38 Rifle and the Nambu Type 96 Li

The Arisaka Type 38 Rifle and the Nambu Type 96 Light Machine Gun were introduced by the Imperial Japanese Army prior to the Second World War and saw service throughout the Burma Campaign as a reliable weapon for Japanese soldiers. The rifle is a shorter ‘carbine’ variant of reduced length and weight, which was often issued to cavalry, engineers and non-frontline troops.

The Nambu Type 96 Light Machine Gun was one of the most common machine guns used by Imperial Japan during the conflict, equivalent to the American Browning Automatic Rifle or the British Bren Gun.
