In 2015, the 200th year anniversary of Gurkha serv

In 2015, the 200th year anniversary of Gurkha service to the crown, the Brigade set out to scale Everest with the aim of placing the first serving Gurkhas at the summit. The majority of the team were at Everest Base Camp when the fateful earthquake struck Nepal on 25 April 2015, causing a devastating avalanche that ended the expedition as the team’s efforts were redirected towards rescuing injured climbers on the mountain. On 15 May 2017, the team returned and made history when they successfully placed nine Gurkhas and four British team members on the summit.

The 14 summiteers, including three Gurkha soldiers, made it to the summit at 1:15pm, a time confirmed by Gyanendra Shrestha, a Tourism Ministry official. This is the first time that serving Gurkha soldiers have reached the summit.

The following morning ten more of the Gurkha Everest team made it to the summit, which was a fantastic achievement for the Brigade and the British Army.

Deputy expedition leader Major Andrew Todd said at the time:

“This is a fantastic achievement for the Brigade of Gurkhas, after our attempt in 2015 was called off due to the avalanches from the earthquake and our team then turned to assist the humanitarian aid that was required in the area.

“We are ecstatic about this success. It is another example of how the British Army strives to achieve excellence. We are delighted to have worked with the Sherpas to fix the ropes to the summit and to be the first team to summit this year – a great collaboration between Nepalis, working together to get the job done.”

The Olympic prize for Alpinism was awarded between

The Olympic prize for Alpinism was awarded between 1924 and 1936 for the most notable mountaineering feats accomplished in the four years leading up to the Olympic games.

This medal was awarded to Naik Tejbir Bura of 6th Gurkha Rifles as one of the participants of the unsuccessful 1922 Mt Everest expedition led by Brigadier-General Bruce.

28 (Ambulance) Squadron The Gurkha Transport Regim

28 (Ambulance) Squadron The Gurkha Transport Regiment was formed from 28 and 31 Squadrons #onthisday in 1990 for service in the Gulf War 1991 on Operation Granby (the British contribution to the conflict). Members of the Band of the Brigade of Gurkhas were also involved, serving as stretcher-bearers. The Squadron was subsequently disbanded on 5th April 1991.

Gurkhas have many traits and many skills that set

Gurkhas have many traits and many skills that set them head and shoulders above their counterparts in battle. Coming from the hilly country of Nepal, skills in mountain warfare are one of them. The below citation tells how the mountain warfare skills of a Gurkha solider and officer, won a close fought battle between Gurkhas and Tibetan soldiers. With Grant and Havildar Pun’s bravery and skills eventually taking the fortress of Gyantse Jong.

“On the occasion of the storming of the Gyantse Jong on 6th July 1904, the storming company, headed by Lieutenant Grant, on emerging from the cover of the village, had to advance up a bare, almost precipitous, rock-face, with little or no cover available, and under a heavy fire from the curtain, flanking towers on both sides of the curtain, and other buildings higher up the Jong. Showers of rocks and stones were at the time being hurled down the hillside by the enemy from above. One man could only go up at a time, crawling on hands and knees, to the breach in the curtain.

Lieutenant Grant, followed by Havildar Karbir Pun, 8th Gurkha Rifles, at once attempted to scale it, but on reaching the top he was wounded and hurled back, as was also the Havildar, who fell down the rock some 30 feet.

Regardless of their injuries, they again attempted to scale the breach, and, covered by the fire of the men below, were successful in their object, the Havildar shooting one of the enemy on gaining the top. The successful issue of the assault was very greatly due to the splendid example shown by Lieutenant Grant and Havildar Karbir Pun.

The latter has been recommended for the Indian Order of Merit”.
