The Arisaka Type 38 Rifle and the Nambu Type 96 Li

The Arisaka Type 38 Rifle and the Nambu Type 96 Light Machine Gun were introduced by the Imperial Japanese Army prior to the Second World War and saw service throughout the Burma Campaign as a reliable weapon for Japanese soldiers. The rifle is a shorter ‘carbine’ variant of reduced length and weight, which was often issued to cavalry, engineers and non-frontline troops.

The Nambu Type 96 Light Machine Gun was one of the most common machine guns used by Imperial Japan during the conflict, equivalent to the American Browning Automatic Rifle or the British Bren Gun.

Before a deployment the friends and relatives of a Japanese serviceman could write good wishes or expressions of care onto the white portions of a Japanese national flag, as if shining outwards from the central red sun. Soldiers often attached great significance to these flags and would keep them during their time in the armed forces, as they were seen to provide morale and a tangible connection to their loved ones.

During the course of the war many examples of these flags were captured from Japanese troops and were kept as souvenirs. This particular flag was brought back by Brigadier Charles Carroll OBE MC, who served in Burma with 6th and 7th Gurkha Rifles.

The war in the Far East began violently and suddenly in 1941 for the Allied forces stationed in Malaya and Burma. In the face of a rapid Japanese advance Allied forces could do little except fall back in the face of a formidable and battle-hardened enemy. By the end of 1941 Malaya had been conquered and on February 7th 1942 Singapore, one of the largest fortresses in the Far East and containing over 80,000 Allied troops, fell to Japanese hands.
