GENERAL SERVICE MEDAL
This General Service Medal was issued in 1923, and never without a clasp, of which two are pictured here.
The Brunei clasp on this medal was awarded to soldiers from Britain, Australia, or New Zealand, and was for service in either Brunei or North Borneo and Sarawak, and sometimes both. It was awarded to a number of Gurkha units. The conflict resulted from a rebel force named the North Kalimantan National Army rising against the Brunei Government in December 1962. Gurkha troops were instrumental in putting this revolt down and a Gurkha presence in Brunei has been supported by the Sultan of Brunei ever since.
Issued in 1950, the Malaya clasp was for service in the conflict with the Malayan People’s Anti-British Army, who sought to remove the British from Malaya and replace its legitimate government with a communist regime. The Malayan Emergency lasted from 1948 to 1960 and was characterised by intense jungle skirmishes between long periods of dedicated counter-terrorism work.
