GENERAL SERVICE MEDAL
This General Service Medal was issued in 1923, and never without a clasp, of which two are pictured here.
The Brunei clasp on this medal was awarded to soldiers from Britain, Australia, or New Zealand, and was for service in either Brunei or North Borneo and Sarawak, and sometimes both. It was awarded to a number of Gurkha units, including: 248 Gurkha Signal Squadron,1/2 Gurkha Rifles, 2/10 Gurkha Rifles, 99 Gurkha Infantry Brigade Pro Unit Gurkha Military Police. The conflict resulted from rebel force named the North Kalimantan National Army rising against the Brunei Government in December 1962.
Issued in 1950, the Malaya clasp was for service in the conflict with the Malayan People’s Anti-British Army, who sought to remove the British from Malaya and to put in her place a communist regime. A number of qualifying criteria existed for various serving forces and supporting civilians. Gurkha units awarded the clasp included: Gurkha Engineers,1/2, 2/2, 1/6, 2/6, 1/7, 2/7, 1/10, 2/10 Gurkha Rifles.
