Uncle Bill – Field Marshal ‘Bill Slim’ and his leadership legacy

Field Marshal William Slim is best known for commanding Fourteenth Army in Burma during the Second World War. He inherited a disastrous situation which, with pragmatic skills and quiet charisma, he turned to ultimate victory.

Field Marshal Slim, who throughout his long career served alongside Gurkhas for over 20 years, may not be one of the most famous of Britain’s Generals but he is arguably the most effective. His leadership skills still inform Army Officer training to this day, and his memoir ‘Defeat into Victory’ has become a staple in military reading lists

Hosted on our website and social media pages, we share daily stories and articles as well as photos and collections from our archives on ‘Britain’s Greatest General’.
