Following our 2025 Summer Exhibition, this compelling evening presentation highlights the experiences of Gurkha officers and soldiers who were held as Japanese Prisoners of War in 1945. This talk is based the diaries of Gurkha officer, Peter Kemmis Betty from 2nd King Edward VII’s Own Gurkha Rifles (The Sirmoor Rifles)
On Thursday 18 September join Richard and David Kemmis Betty as they share insights into life at the infamous Changi prisoner of war camp eighty years ago. You will hear about the hunger, illness, mistreatment, and monotony faced by the prisoners. Drawing from their father Peter Kemmis Betty’s diary from Changi, this talk offers one of the most comprehensive accounts of enduring such challenging times.
In addition to understanding the experiences of the prisoners, you will also appreciate their resilience and how they found ways to cope with their suffering. Join us for an unexpectedly uplifting tale of courage and loyalty at The Gurkha Museum.
