Following in his footsteps: A 39 hour adventure through Nagaland – Lecture and curry lunch
The Trek
Charlotte Carty has recently returned from Kohima, North East India having completed a trek of some 77 miles through Nagaland, non-stop, in under 39 hours, to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the Battle of Kohima. In particular, she was remembering the men of the Assam Regiment and their Commanding Officer at the time, Lt Col William Felix ‘Bruno’ Brown, who was her grandfather. Accompanied by her three children and 16 others, many of them descendants of those involved at Kohima, they retraced the Assam’s footsteps through the foothills of the Himalayas.
Starting at midnight on the night of 1st/2nd April from Jessami, a remote village to the north east of Kohima in the Somra Tracts, the group reached the finish line at the Commonwealth War Grave Cemetery in Kohima at 1500 hrs on 3 April 2024 – replicating to the hour Lt Col Brown and his regiment’s epic journey to Kohima 80 years ago where the Assam then joined the Garrison that held Kohima during the siege stage of the battle.
Charlotte will be talking about the 39-hour adventure, whilst providing a little background as to how it was the newly formed Assam Regiment found themselves caught up in what the National Army Museum voted “Britain’s Greatest Battle”.
